As part of this mission, WAYIED partnered in a multi-sectoral community health outreach in a conflict-affected setting, delivering essential health services, strengthening preventive health behaviors, and fostering social cohesion between host communities and internally displaced persons. Through integrated health care, youth engagement, and community-led action, the initiative demonstrated the power of inclusive development to improve health outcomes, build trust, and strengthen resilience in underserved communities.
Women and Youth for Inclusive Economic Development (WAYIED) is a women-led organization working to advance sexual and reproductive rights, education, women’s empowerment, and environmental sustainability through an inclusive and community-driven approach in Cameroon. Headquartered in Buea, in the South West Region, WAYIED is committed to building resilient communities where women and young people can fully realize their potential.
Founded in 2020 and formally registered on 24 January 2023 (Registration No. 54/G37/C84/VOL I/SAAJP/A3), WAYIED emerged from the collective vision of passionate women who recognized the systemic barriers limiting women and youth in accessing education, reproductive health services, and economic opportunities. Since its inception, the organization has focused on designing and implementing programs that bridge these gaps, particularly in underserved and crisis-affected communities. At the core of WAYIED’s work is a belief in the transformative power of inclusive development and community ownership.
This commitment guided WAYIED’s participation as a partner organization in a multi-sectoral community health outreach initiative implemented in a conflict-affected setting. The initiative aimed to expand access to essential primary health care, promote preventive health behaviors, and strengthen social cohesion between host communities and internally displaced persons (IDPs). By working in close collaboration with health authorities, community leaders, grassroots organizations, youth groups, and trained volunteers, WAYIED contributed to a coordinated response that addressed immediate health needs while fostering trust and solidarity at the community level.
From the outset, the outreach prioritized inclusion, participation, and dignity. Women leaders and youth representatives were actively engaged in planning and implementation to ensure that services were culturally sensitive and responsive to local realities. This community-driven approach helped create safe and welcoming spaces where residents and displaced populations alike could access care, share concerns, and engage in collective problem-solving.
Over the intervention period, the outreach delivered 1,669 essential health service interactions, demonstrating strong demand and confidence in the program. Clinical services included medical consultations, routine check-ups, and counseling, reaching diverse segments of the population. Notably, the initiative recorded increased participation by men in preventive health services, signaling an important shift in health-seeking behavior in a context where men often delay seeking care. Nutrition support targeted women and children facing heightened vulnerability due to displacement, economic hardship, and food insecurity.
A key component of the outreach was the protection of children and other vulnerable groups. Large-scale deworming activities reached hundreds of beneficiaries, with a deliberate focus on children under the age of five to reduce the burden of neglected tropical diseases. The distribution of essential medicines ensured timely treatment of common illnesses, helping to prevent complications and reduce avoidable health risks within the community.
Preventive health and education were central to the intervention. WAYIED supported the delivery of structured health education sessions addressing communicable disease prevention, personal and environmental hygiene, nutrition, maternal and child health, and early health-seeking behavior. In parallel, condoms were distributed to promote HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention and encourage safer sexual practices. These efforts helped correct misinformation, reduce stigma, and empower individuals and families with practical knowledge to improve their health outcomes.
Environmental health and social cohesion were strengthened through a Hygiene and Sanitation Cleanup Campaign that mobilized host community members and IDPs to work side by side. Community volunteers cleared gutters, removed waste, and improved shared spaces that directly affect public health. The campaign concluded with a communal meal prepared by women leaders, creating an opportunity for dialogue, mutual understanding, and trust-building across community lines.
Youth engagement was a defining pillar of the outreach and closely aligned with WAYIED’s mission. Through a dedicated youth-friendly space supported by partner organizations, adolescents and young adults accessed comprehensive sexuality education, menstrual health support, contraceptive counseling, and STI prevention services in a safe and confidential environment. Peer-led facilitation and interactive learning approaches encouraged open discussion, challenged harmful norms, and equipped young people with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.
Reflecting on the outcomes of this initiative, WAYIED Women and Youth for Inclusive Economic Development recognizes the outreach as a powerful example of how integrated, community-driven health interventions can bridge service gaps in crisis-affected settings. The strong participation across all service areas underscores the importance of trust, inclusion, and local leadership in achieving sustainable impact.
As Cameroon continues to navigate the complex effects of conflict, displacement, and economic inequality, sustained investment in primary health care, women’s leadership, youth empowerment, and community-based solutions remains critical. WAYIED remains committed to partnering with communities and stakeholders to promote inclusive development, strengthen resilience, and support healthier, more cohesive societies where no one is left behind.
